Last day in Berlin

Our last full day in Berlin involved some whirlwind sight-seeing. We took a long walk from our hotel to the Berlin Zoo, stopping at the Sony Center in Postdamer Platz for breakfast along the way. The Berlin Zoo was nice but I must say not as nice as the Nuremburg Zoo. The animal habitats were smaller and everything just looked a little more run down. Still, very entertaining for a 19 month old. The highlight of the zoo trip happened shortly after our arrival. While waiting at the Panda exhibit for its feeding, we were admiring the ducks in a fish pond. Something must have caught Angus’ eye and he exclaimed "Oh no!" And then we heard the 'plop!" Down we look, only to find the Bisou binky floating in the pond! The ducks and the fish scurried to see what morsel of food just fell in, only to be disappointed that the blue plastic thing was not edible.

This would have been funny enough, but you need to know the side story about the Bisou binky. As mentioned in a previous post, the McManus family has a French Bulldog named Bisou who happened to LOVE Angus’ binkies! We came to Germany with 4 binkies, and within a week we were down to one. Even this last binky was in rough shape, having been saved from the jaws of Bisou with dog teeth scars on the outer side. At first Angus didn’t want the damaged goods but none of the back-up binkies I bought at Müller would suffice either. So, he accepted the Bisou binky that whistled when he breathed...

When I went to Portland, the first thing I did was find a store that carried the binky Angus likes and I brought 2 of them back to Germany with me…and he refused them! By that time, he loved the Bisou binky and would accept no others! So, on he went for days with the gnarled piece of plastic stuck in his mouth until…plop! Into the fishpond with BB! We said our goodbyes and apologized for polluting the fish pond and hours later, Angus reluctantly took a brand new binky for soothing (I guess when we’re ready to get rid of the binky forever we’ll need to find another fish pond!).

Before we went to the zoo I found out about a beer garten nearby that was kid-friendly. We headed there for lunch after the zoo and Angus enjoyed the wooden boat and sand toys while we ate and drank some good German beer. A few hours of napping after that, and then we were off to meet the Higgins family for dinner and an evening boat tour. It was a wonderful way to spend our last day in Berlin and I look forward to returning one day to take in more sights and history!
