Nuremburg sight seeing

One more trip to Nuremburg! Emily, Teri, Angus and I went to Nuremburg to do a little sightseeing the Sunday before we left Herzo. Emily has been training diligently and running all around the Herzo countryside but hadn’t yet had a chance to see some of the really historical areas of Germany. Nuremburg’s history dates back to 1050 as a trading settlement. It is perhaps sadly better known for the more recent (relatively speaking) history as the location for the Nazi war crimes trials in 1945-49. It is a lovely city that is full of history (and good gingerbread!). We enjoyed walking through the Kaiserburg, one of 3 castles in the city, strolling the Hauptmarkt, admiring classic architecture and munching on good German bread and some gelato!

In the picture to the right you can see Emily turning the gold ring on the Schöner Brunnen (translation=beautiful fountain) in the Hauptmarkt (fountain in full glory in other pic)—supposedly if you turn the ring 3 times your wishes will come true! I also gave it a whirl! We also happened to be at the Hauptmarkt at noon and saw the display on the clock at the Frauenkirche.

Two other pictures on the right show Angus and I at the Hauptmarkt and on the bridge overlooking the river Pegnitz and the Heilig-Geitz-Spital (Hospital of the Holy Spirit), which Eyewitness Travel Guidebook now says is an old folks home and restaurant! The final picture is of this elaborate statue that was on our walk from the River Pegnitz back to the Hauptmarkt. I can't tell you the story behind it but I thought I'd share the image with you.

It was a fun day; thanks to Teri for being our tour guide!
